Communication is the leading cause of harm in healthcare. This is because communication is complex, with many parts involved in the exchange of information; verbal and non-verbal communication, language, body language, literacy, active listening and more.
Yet, it is clearly a very important part of being a physician, having the responsibility of sharing vital information to a variety of audiences. CanMEDS defines Communicator as one of the seven key roles of a physician because they “facilitate the gathering and sharing of essential information for effective health care.”
"The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place."
~ George Bernard Shaw
